Third Competition of 2024-25

Dawn At Eryi National Park by Alex Swyer

The third competition of the year took place on 23rd January. The judge was Paul Graber ARPS, a former chairman of Guildford Photographic Society. Paul was making a return visit, having judged for us before.

Paul chose his favourite images and then a number of Highly Commended and Commended images. He was particularly impressed by the variety and quality of the entries. He gave us many expert tips as he went through our images.

Judge’s favourite images of the evening

The judge’s favourites were:

  • Prints: “Dawn at Eryi National Park” by Alex Swyer – a lovely landscape featuring a tree in the foreground, with a misty lake, mountains and a gorgeous dawn sky beyond.
  • PDI: “Fancy bumping into you” by Nigel Cherry – a skilful and fun image showing two young ladies enjoying themselves on the ‘dodgems’.

A further 3 prints were Highly Commended and 3 Commended and 5 PDIs were Highly Commended and 5 Commended.

  • Highly Commended: “Loch Lomond Reflections” by Martin Tomes.
  • Commended: “Mupe Rocks” by Alex Swyer.

  • Commended: “Harris Waves” by Martin Tomes.

In total there were 16 prints and the judge was complimentary about all of them, especially the quality of the printing.

Projected Images (PDIs)

  • Highly Commended: “Shadows” by Dean Sephton.  
  • Highly Commended: “Moth Impression” by George Reekie.
  • Highly Commended: “Go On Give Us a Kiss” by Alex Liz Barber.
  • Highly Commended: “Girl balancing on low-rope, Sarajkund” by Ruth Rusby.
  • Commended: “New Year with Paddington” by Daisy Kane.
  • Commended: “Homeward Bound” by George Reekie.
  • Commended: “In Your Face” by Martin Tomes.
  • Commended: “Elvis ain’t dead” by Nichola Hall.
  • Commended: “Midnight feast” by Nigel Cherry.

In total there were 25 projected images. The judge was complimentary about all of them and mentioned the large variety of genres and styles.

With the judge’s tasks completed, a vote of thanks was given by Chris West, bringing an enjoyable evening to a conclusion.
