Second competition of the 2024-25 year

Autumn Vibes by Alex Swyer

The second competition of the year took place on 28th November. The judge was Ken Scott, known to all for training judges and being president of Steyning Camera Club. Ken is very keen for photographers to demonstrate Expressive Quality in their images – something he would be looking for as he reviewed our images.

Ken chose his favourite images and then a number of Highly Commended and Commended images. He was particularly impressed by the variety and quality of the entries.

Judge’s favourite images of the evening:

The judge’s favourites were:

  • Prints: “Autumn Vibes” by Alex Swyer – an autumnal woodland scene with a lovely atmosphere, beautiful colours and faint mist in the background.
  • PDI: “China Town Hustle and Bustle” by Liz Barber – a colourful image with intentional camera movement used to accentuate the busy atmosphere in China Town.

A further 3 prints were Highly Commended and 5 Commended and 3 PDIs were Highly Commended were 5 Commended.

  • Highly Commended: “Anemone” by Liz Barber.
  • Commended: “Sunset over Tryfan” by Alex Swyer.

  • Commended: “Light on Silken Threads” by Dean Sephton.
  • Commended: “Sinuosity” by Ray Foxlee.
  • Commended: “Grand Design” by Ray Foxlee.

In total there were 18 prints and the judge was complimentary about all of them, especially the quality of the printing.

  • Commended: “Reeds” by Alex Swyer.

  • Commended: “contre-jour” by Dean Sephton.
  • Commended: “Emerging” by Liz Barber.
  • Commended: “Quayside Tyres” by Martin Tomes.
  • Commended: “Inflating the balloon at dawn” by Nigel Cherry.

In total there were 28 projected images. The judge was complimentary about all of them and mentioned the large variety of genres and styles.

With the judge’s tasks completed, a vote of thanks was given, bringing an enjoyable evening to a conclusion.
