Lots to think about

Meeting Report

Tony Worobiec FRPS was our guest speaker this evening. Some of us saw him when Steyning CC had Tony as their guest speaker before Christmas when he gave a talk on BW photography, the one he was originally booked to give to us! So we knew we were in for a great evening, and so it was.

Tony’s talk was entitled ‘The Art of Composition’ and he started by making a few funnies about his surname and other stories to get our attention.

Tony taught Art for many years and as his interest in photography developed, so did the connection between the two forms of picture making.

Tony started with some basic conceptions which of course almost immediately brought up the rule of thirds which a lot of camera club judges are obsessed with, and which rubs off onto club members as the only thing they should remember. Wrong!

Time and again throughout the evening, whilst demonstrating all the different composition ideas and rules, he emphasised that the most important thing is to go along with your own instincts to satisfy yourself first and foremost, and not to worry about what some CC judge is going to say in criticism. However, when entering competitions, you do have to second guess the judge to win!!

I am not going to go through the very many aspects of composition that Tony demonstrated with some very memorable images, because if you really want to study the subject more, you can buy his book, with the same title as his talk, on Amazon.

During the evening he gave us loads of composition ideas using opposing colours; different numbers of objects in a picture; positioning of objects within; different proportions of the same subject, etc etc, and changing images to BW where you can really turn up the contrast.

Tony is sponsored by Photospeed and he displayed a nice variety of his prints for us to enjoy at the break.

We welcomed several visitors from our friends from Steyning CC and Mike Davison from Chichester, who was taught photography by Storrington CC! There were over 30 attendees at tonights talk and we all enjoyed a very informative, interesting and amusing evening with Tony, who is a very well practised communicator.

Our Chairman Chris in thanking Tony described the evening as ‘Thought provoking’.

It was certainly that, so thank you very much Mr Worowatsit, or however you say it.
