Critical assessment or peer review

Event
Abstract

Although generically called critique the term is not universally popular and an alternative of "critical assessment" was introduced by the chairman as four groups of members sat down to peer review 12 images from four of their peers. We have held critiques before where the whole audience is free to comment on the presented image but this time the format was changed. In this amended format the photographer introduced their image to a smaller group of  five or six including a facilitator explaining what they had hoped to achieve, any particular aspects they wanted to draw attention to or any thoughts on what they could do to complete or improve the image. Analysis, positive questioning and critical commentary from their colleagues followed. All images were displayed on laptops although some participants also brought along some prints to help the discussion. The subjects of the photographs varied widely from macro through landscape, street photography and abstract to motor racing and birds. An interesting experiment in format certainly, and undoubtedly a useful exercise.
