Fourth competition of the 2022-23 season

Photo opportunity by Kristina Byng

Our fourth competition of the 2022-23 season took place on 2 March 2023 and was judged by Roger Mendham, LRPS, from Bookham Camera Club in Surrey. Roger was welcomed by Janet Brown. Though a very experienced judge, this was Roger’s first time at Storrington. Whilst judging he gave frequent suggestions for improvements and entertained everyone with anecdotes drawn from his wide knowledge and experience. All present thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Judge’s favourite images of the evening

As always at Storrington, the standard was high. The judge’s favourites were:

  • Prints: “Rough Day” by Alex Swyer – an atmospheric image of heavy waves impacting a harbour wall and lighthouse; praised for the detail throughout the image.
  • PDI: “Photo opportunity” by Kristina Byng – a B&W beach scene with plenty of drama in the sky and two walkers in the distance creating a strong narrative. The judge praised the photographer for including so much sky.

Highly Commended

A further 9 images were Highly Commended; 4 prints and 5 PDIs.

Printed Images

  • “Blue bearded iris” by Kristina Byng - a lovely image of an Iris, praised for its delicate lighting and the detail in the image
  • “Gentle Cyclamen” by Janet Brown – a very delicate high key image, praised for its simplicity, atmosphere and careful choice of light grey mount.
  • “Dawn” by Alex Swyer – depicting a sunrise on a frosty morning, with a group of trees in silhouette with every detail evident.
  • “Bamborough Castle Dawn” by Martin Tomes – a very striking image with every detail of Bamborough castle evident beneath a beautiful pink mackerel sky.

In total there were 16 printed images; too many to describe them all. The judge was complimentary about all entries.

Rough Day by Alex SwyerProjected Images (PDIs)

  • “Watching the parade!” by Nigel Cherry – described as a wonderful collection of faces, as a boy watches the Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph
  • “Stand-off on the Old Fence Post” by George Reekie – a fence post with a Greater Spotted Woodpecker on one side and Blue Tits on the other, with a strong narrative and wonderful texture and detail.
  • “View to the Loch” by Liz Barber – a delicate landscape with just enough detail to gently carry the eye through the hillside to the Loch beyond.
  • “The sun breaks through” by Dean Sephton – a lovely atmospheric woodland scene of sunlight breaking through the trees; likened by the judge to a closing scene from ET.
  • “Engine Cleaner” by George Reekie – a well-lit and well taken image of a workman cleaning the wheel of a locomotive. With lots of atmosphere.

In total there were 26 projected images; too many to describe them all. The judge was complimentary about all images.

With the judge’s tasks completed, Janet Brown gave a vote of thanks, bringing an enjoyable evening to a conclusion.
