General Notes from the Secretary
I think that Mike Davison must be congratulated on his achievement of becoming an L.R.P.S. He certainly has put in some good pictures during the last few months and it is a well deserved award. Well done Mike.
I look forward to the lecture by Peter Astley this coming Thursday and I expect that we can all learn something from the wealth of experience Peter has. He is a fine photographer and belonged to Chichester Camera Club at one time so he has a good reputation.
We really do need to spread the load of the work required to be done at break time. Up to now several stalwarts of the club have prepared and delivered the break time refreshments. This Thursday we will pass round a check list for people to sign up to lend a hand on a more formal basis. I hope you will help us and put your names down for a “turn at the tea pot”.

Slide Competition
The third ‘open’ competition on 30 March was judged by Roger Bathard as Mike Constable had to cancel at short notice. The slide entry was well down on the previous rounds this year with only 15 entries – I hope this is just a blip not a trend! Jean got the only 20 awarded with ‘Scene in winter’ a shot taken from her bathroom window! Derek got 19 for his ‘Sunrise Skye’ and Martin 18 for ‘PBY Catalina’. As the published league tables show, Derek is the slide worker of the year with 171 points – congratulations Derek. Jean is second with 169 and Martin third with 163 points. It has been quite an exciting contest throughout the season. Our ‘Best of the Year’ competition on 4th May should provide a real problem for the judge Philip Peddy.
The Crouch Shield Slide Competition was held on 22 March at Yapton and judged by Ian Platt. Ten clubs entered, each providing 5 slides from a minimum of 4 workers. Our fortunes fluctuated during the evening with the judge showing very fair and objective assessments presented often with gentle humour. It made for a pleasant evening. Our results were reflected in the final position. Jean got 20 for her ‘Gentoo penguin & chick’, Derek 19 for ‘Rusty Links’ but the remaining 3 slides did not fair as well. The winning club was Mid-Sussex and we came 6th. Considering the large size of some of the clubs competing this is not a bad result – at least we came top of the lower half! However as was often said in my school reports we ‘could do better’.
Ian MacWhirter
Print Competition
Roger Bathard stepped in to judge this competition as Mike Constable was indisposed. So very many thanks to him for helping out.
Roger started by saying that he had enjoyed looking at our pictures and he obviously rated them highly because he awarded one 20, two 19s ,and seven 18s.
The 20 was of a Dragonfly taken by me. Second was a spectacular close up picture of a spider about to have his supper by Ian MacWhirter. Third place was awarded to Paul Hayward with his picture of a Giraffe’s Head .
However, Mike Davison got 19 for his spectacular picture called ‘Morning Light’ which was of some trees with the light breaking through them.
Then, in the order they appeared, the 18s were awarded to me for ‘Frosted Leaves and Web’, Mike’s ‘Lotus Temple Delhi’; ‘Maintaining the Image’ by Ian; ‘Patterns in the Sand’ by Mike; ‘Pot and Grille’ by Peter Picthall; ‘Ely Cathedral’ by Paul; and ‘Peregrine Falcon’ by Sue Worsfold.
At the end of the five competitions, we now have our Winner in Ian MacWhirter.
Very well done Ian and very well deserved. Ian’s pictures are an inspiration to us all.
Up until the last comp., he never got less than 18 points for any of his pictures.
Second was Mike Davison who has done very well indeed this season , ending up after discarding the lower points only 2 behind Ian, and to crown his efforts, on the day of our last competition, Paul was down at the RPS HQ at Bath where he was awarded his LRPS. Our warmest congratulations Mike. Finally, I struggled into third place well behind the leaders.
Back to the competition evening, as there were not too many slides, Roger was able to comment on a reasonable number of the en-print entries. He awarded First place to Paul our current champion for his picture of a snake. Well done Paul, champion again. Second was Susan Worsfold with a nice picture of a Fir Tree and Third place went to Sue Jahan with an unusual farmyard picture. Paul was unbeatable this year with some very good pictures, but the two Sues and Peter Picthall are snapping at his heals. Well done to all our entrants. Final scores: Paul 13; Sue Worsfold 8; Sue Jahan 3; Peter Picthall 3; Jane Coward 2; Margaret Gregory 1; Alf Taylor 1.
Finally, I must report on our entries to the Sussex Fed Print Competition. We did not do too well being placed 16th out of 19 clubs. We got 82 marks against the winner’s Steyning who got 94! Ian’s ‘Artic Tern in Flight’ got 17 as did my’ Tawny Owl’ Our other three entries were each awarded 16. They were ‘Alex Baron’ by Martin,’ St Paul’s at Night’ by Paul and ‘Waterfall’ by Ian.
So now we just have our last ‘Print of the year Competition’ on May 4th, Just THREE entries from each entrant this year.
En-print Result.
