Our first PI competition of the new season saw an excellentturnout of 81 images submitted for evaluation by our judge for the evening, a former member, Mike Davison. Mike is now a member of Chichester Camera Club, having previously been our programme secretary. He gave us a talk last year on 'Trying for an RPS Distinction' encouraging us to 'go for it'.
New to judging, Mike requested that he be given the opportunity to evaluate the images prior to the evening and this was agreed to. I am very sceptical in providing images to be pre-judged in this way. Viewing on a PC monitor is not the same as a projected image. Images are submitted to our competitions with a maximum resolution of 1400x1050 pixels, the native resolution of the projector. If the external monitor displays at a lower resolution, then the software has to compensate for the percentage view. As I have demonstrated in the past, if the image is not shown at actual percentage size then the images may not be displayed correctly. To preserve the anonymity of the photographers, images were supplied in both PDF and PowerPoint slideshow format.
During the judging Mike pointed out that a few images did not appear as he had seen them at home and asked how these should be marked. In all cases, images should be marked as they are seen on the night. This is our standard method of running competitions.
Having stated that some images appeared better at home than through our competition software, I did some investigations. The instructions for submitting projected images require that they be in sRGB format. The official specification of sRGB is IEC 61966-2-1:1999 and this is one of the options available when converting with Photoshop or Elements. Unfortunately, the images that had displayed differently were in the e-sRGB colourspace. This is an extended sRGB colourspace and will render some colours out of gamut, consequently displaying differently within our competition software.
In the completion itself, Mike scored six images with 20, two scored 19 and 10 scored 18.
