Third Competition of the 2022-2023 season

Downs Mist by Martin Tomes LRPS

Our third competition of the 2022-23 season took place on 19 January 2023 and was judged by Paul O’Toole who was welcomed by Janet Brown. Paul is a very experienced judge, a member of Littlehampton Camera Club, and is well known to most members. He entertained us all with interesting and often funny anecdotes as he reviewed our images. He frequently gave suggestions for possible improvements based on his wide knowledge and experience.

Judge’s favourite images of the evening

As always at Storrington the standard was high. The judge’s favourites were:

  • Prints: “Downs Mist” by Martin Tomes – a misty, atmospheric and ethereal  view over the South Downs. With very little contrast and a lovely glow, the judge said it would look good on his wall.
  • PDI: “About to Kick Off” by David Seddon – a gritty, powerful shot of two men about to start fighting, with lots of atmosphere and texture. The judge added that he would like to see it printed.

Highly Commended

A further 4 images were Highly Commended; 2 prints and 2 PDIs.

Printed Images

  • “Doggy fashion” by Chris West – a portrait of a dog wearing a flat cap. With every detail sharp and a catchlight in his eyes, the personality of the dog shone through.
  • “A flooded pasture” by Dean Sephton – showing rows of grass poking above the flood water, this was a simple yet very interesting image. Often the simplest shots are the most attractive.

In total there were 20 printed images; too many to describe them all. The judge was complimentary about all entries.

Projected Images (PDIs)

  • About to Kick Off by David Seddon“Home with the catch” by Dean Sephton – An interesting grainy photo of a trawler entering port in heavy seas. The judge described the image as strongly conveying the power of the sea.
  • “You looking at me?” by David Seddon – a very creative image of an eye looking through a gap in a fence. The judge liked the colour version but would also have liked to see it in monochrome.

In total there were 36 projected images; too many to describe them all. The judge was complimentary about all entries.

With the judge’s tasks completed, Janet Brown gave a vote of thanks, bringing an enjoyable evening to a conclusion.
