"The more I practise the luckier I get" - and will cover why still life is one of the best ways to improve your photography - just as it is with painting. Photography lessons learnt and familiarity with equipment gained in the privacy of your home with a few bits of fruit and a couple of jars will be more helpful than ever you'd think wherever you're taking pictures and whatever the subject.

The first session will cover:-

  • General set up - what you need and what you don't.
  • Camera settings - what works best
  • Composition - what works and what doesn't - and why.

I plan it to be a hands-on session so please bring your camera with a suitable lens. And discussion, suggestion and disagreement will be encouraged.

The February session will be about  image selection and processing. Yes, there will be Lightroom but not too much.

PaintingThis will all be based on the way I take and process still lifes and other images. Before I got hooked on photography I used to paint quite a lot and now want to get back into that again - and still life seems the best place to restart - at least the subject matter is under control even if the paint brush isn't. Hence I've been doing some still life photography lately and really enjoying it. Here's an example from my earlier painting life - must be 20 years since I painted it. But those lemons in the photograph above were still in Lidl last Thursday!

It might not have the immediate excitement of rugby in the rain but still life photography does offer almost unlimited opportunity for practice in the comfort of your own home. Come along and bring out your inner Cezanne.
