Storrington were the winners at the Mix n' Match

Meeting Report

Southwick hosted this Mix n' Match evening between Southwick, Steyning and Storrington Camera Clubs.

An evening of fun was had by all, as Eric Burchell judged whether our images matched the image put up by the leader of each round, and which was the best image offered.

The evening was well attended, and cheers and heckling added to the entertainment.  At half time, Storrington were leading by one point, the scores were very close at 24, 23 and 22.  By the end of the evening, no one had any idea who might have won, but Storrington managed to stay in the lead, with a final score of 48 points.  Steyning came second, and the host club did the honourable thing and came third!  Eric commented at the end that Storrington winning this event had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he was judging at Storrington the following week!

The operational team on the night were Di and Daisy squinting at the images in the dark and selecting one for each round which was promptly projected by John, with Martin generally advising, timekeeping and keeping score!  The team were enthusiastically supported from the gallery by Ian and Jean, Peter P, Paul, Jane, Liz and Tim.

Derek Forss landscape photographer

Meeting Report

Derek ForssTonight we had a welcome return visit by Derek Forss. He has been a professional landscape photographer for many years working for, amongst many others, the National Trust and Ordinance Survey. Derek also teaches photography at Earnley (south of Chichester) and leads photographic walking holidays for HF holidays, who have a house locally - Abingworth  Hall at Thakeham. I have attended both locations and have been on a holiday in Yorkshire with Derek as tutor (not that he remembers that!). Derek showed us some of his books including a couple which are published on line with www.blurb.com where they can be obtained.

Firstly Derek went through all the Olympus camera gear that he uses for his work (he is sponsored by Olympus).

Derek's Picture Collection

Meeting Report

Derek and his MacThis evening's meeting kicked off with some of Derek's slide shows. We were shown several collections of images, starting with a couple of short ones. The longer sequence which followed contained an eclectic mix of pictures, I don't think I have ever seen the Eurofighter Tornado and mating damsel flies in the same sequence before. Derek then picked out some of the images and explained what they were and how he had gone about shooting them.

Derek is one of our top photographers and his camera skills were shown in the images he presented. He is a keen natural history photographer (something which I don't have the patience for) and showed us some remarkable images of birds and insects.

A thoroughly enjoyable presentation. Next time I must remember to ask him to take that name badge off before I photograph him.

Martin magic

Meeting Report

The second half of this evenings meeting was a very comprehensive instruction by Martin Tomes showing us how he deals with his digital images from downloading the camera's card to having it ready for printing. Sadly time did not allow him to show us fully final preparations for printing.

Martin downloads his images from a picture taking session into a folder in LlIGHTROOM  where he firstly converts all his raw files into DNG so that they can be read in future by all past and present manipulation programmes. The very latest version of say Photoshop CS4 is not necessarily able to read all files from the very latest cameras until they bring out conversion software which you can then download. All versions of Photoshop can read any DNG file.

Martin then showed us how he labels files with the date in year/month/day format. He also tags them with useful catagories such as location; subject; sunset; and then 'stacks' similar shots taken with different exposures for instance. He checks through and deletes any 'rubbish' shots,  (but Martin be aware that these shots could be competition winners!!)

Tim Hulbert gets us into festive mood

Meeting Report

Our last meeting of 2009 found us with Christmas Fare - nuts crisps mince pies and mulled wine brought by some members (who I will not name as I do not know who they were sadly; but thank you)

We started the evening with the presentation of a cup by Paul to Chairman Peter which he won at the recent Sussex Fed P I competition for the Best Image_his study of 'Katie'.  Peter could not come to the competition as he was away and this all came as a complete surprise to him. Very well done Peter.

Next we had a quiz in which we had to identify camera club members from images taken of just our eyes by Tim last week. This was won by Daisy and Di Walker who both recognised all the images. One or two male members only got 2 or 3 and one did not even recognise his own wife!!  You can deduce from this who is watching who!?

The main business of the evening was the Mix and Match competition. The photography club had been divided into two teams led by Daisy and Di. One team put up an image - out of 50 PIs which had been pre-selected by the teams - and then the opposing team had to match the PI with one from their own bank. Tim was the judge and had to say whether this PI was a match or not  and which was the best image out of the two and award marks accordingly. This led to much loud banter from all and sundry as to whether they agreed or not.

Newsletter December 2009

Amazing, she only enters one, a first time for a print, and scoops the top position with a delightful posterised picture of a frolicking horse – very well done Ruth.

We did well at the Regnum Print Competition

Meeting Report

Chichester triumphed yet again! But enough of them, what about the team that came second? You guessed, it was us!

A great effort against the giants of the competition, we were ahead at the half way stage, but were pipped at the post with their last print which scored a 20, giving them victory by 2 points.

Star of our show was Derek with his “Golden Eagle with Kill” that won great praise from the judge Liz Boud.  Honourable mentions went to Daisy for “Upper Cast Neighbourhood” and Ian with “Male Broad Bodied Chaser”.

Unfortunately John Gauvin’s “Snowdrop” got marked down because it was not given its correct name of Amarillidaceae “Galanthus”.  Don’t make that mistake again John!!!

Anyway coming second out of nine clubs was a tremendous performance, and should give us encouragement for the rest of the season. I know we have some great prints for next year’s competition, which of course we will be hosting.

The scores achieved by our prints were as follows:
