Projected Image Competition - Any Subject
Meeting Report
Judge Ian Betts
Our second projected image competition had 54 entries submitted for analysis by our judge for the evening, Ian Betts. Ian, from Henfield Camera Club, judged our 3rd PI competition last season when he marked in the range 14 to 20. On that occasion he gave five images the lower end of the range of 14 points. This time only one image received that mark and it would be prudent not to mention who the photographer was.
Ian deliberates very carefully, taking his time over awarding marks and at one stage I considered whether to prompt him to speed up as time was beginning to run short, particularly as he had held back fourteen images. In the end I decided to allow him the benefit of using his time management skills to allow the later images the same critical eye as the earlier images.
Previous competition reports have bemoaned the narrow range that judges prefer to mark in and on this occasion it has resulted in some twenty-eight images receiving 18 or higher, more than 50% of the submissions for this competition alone. Compare that to last season when the total for the entire year was thirty images within that range.
Seventeen images attained 18 points. These were: Anne Nagle, Goldfinch on a Teasel; Derek Grieve, Black-necked Grebe and Lincoln Cathedral; Peter Michell, Fisherman at the end of the day and Brown Girl in the ring; Di Walker, Foot Loose and Clematis Seedhead; Jane Coward, A Winter Sculpture, Full Spring Plumage and Romany Boys with Pony; John Gauvin, Rust on the Rocks and "Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil"; James Heath, See You and Spoilt for Choice; Clive Trusler, Bee-po and "Language Monument, Paarl"; Peter Picthall, Guardian of Petra.
Seven images were awarded 19 points. These were: Paul Hayward, Wandering; Anne Nagle, A Nuthatch; Peter Michell, Holly; Di Walker, Berber Chief; Martin Tomes, Evil Clown; Audrey Gray, Total Bliss; Roy Powell, Reflecting.
Four images accomplished the coveted 20 points. Paul Hayward, Drinking Together, and Hard Tmes; Anne Nagle, A Greater Spotted Woodpecker; Derek Grieve, Early morning view from San Gimignano.
Congratulations to all entrants for providing a worthwhile competition with a special mention to Paul Hayward for not only being voted best PI of the night with Hard Times but also achieving 59 points out of a possible 60.
